OneSearch, a new service now being trialed by the library, allows users to search the content of multiple databases simultaneously. For example, a search in OneSearch for Frida Kahlo returns results from the Library Catalog, JSTOR, Art & Architecture Complete, and a myriad of other research tools.

Try OneSearch now through the end of the spring semester, and please let us know if you find that it makes searching easier for you. (Getting OneSearch would add a hefty annual fee on top of the subscription prices we already pay for library databases, so we want to be sure that it’s worth the price.)

$18,000/yr worth???

Well Well at first I thought Okay~! This is good, maybe better keeping this.

But But after I actually typed in a keyword (related to the research topic that I've been working on for the faculty-student research) and tried to see if all those significant articles that I read for lit.review in the past. I often use Google Scholar or PsycInfo to find articles and honestly I couldn't find a significant difference between those and OneSearch (especially considering the amount of money you pay). As someone else mentioned above OneSearch was not efficient to find a specific (the very right one the very right one!!!! that i'm looking for) article.. Also although it said the presented order of articles was based on the relevance related to the topic but actually I couldn't see the primary articles that I used for my intro and conclusion...

$18,000/yr worth???

I agree. $18,000 for a search box is not worth it. I believe this college could use the money to improve other aspects of it and make a better investment.

A Variety of Options

I feel that one search is very helpful when searching for people, but less concise when searching for a specific topic. Whenever I looked for a person, I recieved a variety of visual, audio, and written resources. I seemed to have more difficulty looking for subjects though. Overall, I think it is a good addition to Lafayette, but not necessarily essential.

User-friendliness

One Search seems to be very user-friendly, especially for students who are beginning to do research. It is a helpful research tool to see the availability of a certain article in different database. Library catalogue and ILL service are incorporated. GOOD tool overall.

PDF download

OneSearch is doing a good job of providing direct PDF download for research paper that have online source.

That's easier than the seperate searching tool. I appreciate this feature of OneSearch.

It is not as useful as I was

It is not as useful as I was expecting it to be. I think the school should try it for two years to see what incoming students think of it. It could be really helpful for those beginning research, but once you are more used to doing research I think it is easier to search within indiviudal journals.

Consider the opportunity cost

It is certainly very helpful to concentrate many different databases under one search. However, it takes more time to locate the item.

In addition, opportunity cost should be considered. Given the fact that we already have sufficent search tools, we should consider how much more money are we willing to spend on search tools, or is it better spent if this amount of money is used in other improvements of library?

A Great Addition To Lafayette

I think that this has the potential to be very useful to Lafayette students. Instead of opening up a series of links, everything is now contained on one single page. I also like that we can specify our search materials in order to find the exactly articles that we want.

Nice

It seems very useful. Results are relevant and it's nice to truly see EVERYTHING on one page. It also provides a cleaner and more friendly interface for searching Lafayette's own catalog.

Locating Journals

OneSearch doesn't seem to do a very good job of locating specific journals.
